Lee Balaam

I first played table tennis, aged about 10, at a summer play scheme in Stowmarket. Shortly afterwards I joined the club at Centre 3 which at the time was run by Bert Robinson. I attended the club sessions regularly and often cycled there from the other side of town! I quickly progressed to playing in Division 2 of the then Stowmarket League and after just one season I was playing in the 1st Division.

I represented Stowmarket Table Tennis Club in the Stowmarket League for a few more seasons before moving to Britannia TTC and representing them in the Ipswich League. I was coached by Paul Hutchinson as part of the Ipswich Sport 2000 Junior Table Tennis Squad and attended occasional Regional Training Camps at St Neots. As a Junior I competed in open tournaments around the country and as a result gained a national ranking. I reached number one in the Suffolk Junior ranking list and played regularly for the County Junior 1st Team.

I have previously been nationally ranked as a senior and have represented Suffolk 1st and 2nd teams as well as playing for both Britannia TTC and De Verre Sudbury in the National League. I have also played in both the Sudbury and Norwich Leagues and for a number of years I attended a Summer Table Tennis Camp in Margate run by Roy Pugh where I met my wife (also a Table Tennis player and current club member).

After about a ten year break I returned to Stowmarket Table Tennis Club and played for Stowmarket Eagles in the 1st Division of the Bury St Edmunds and District Table Tennis League. I have held various Committee positions in the club over recent years including Chairman, Club Captain, Treasurer and Junior Representative and in 2012 I helped organise and run our Club Championships.
