The 2023-24 League Championships which took place on the 17th March was well attended, as always, with around 40 participants.
Given the number of event and players, it was a long day for those still there at the end but, having played at another similar event recently, where I and others sometimes had very long gaps between matches, I’d like to thank Mark James and Martin O’Leary for a well-organised, well-managed and enjoyable event.
Once again, our club enjoyed a number of successes: Alex Gosling retained his Junior singles trophy, this time beating fellow club member Louie Bayes in the final.
Louie’s teammate Matthew Beales was also a runner-up, in the handicap event to Ethan Lloyd.
Both Matt and Louie were doubly unlucky in also having been beaten in very tight 5-set matches with Club Captain, David Gough on his way to winning the Restricted event, who also overcame Club Chairman, Richard Stokes, in the semis, and fellow Pumas teammate Nick Anthony in the final – another tight 5-set match.
Finally, Alistair Mitson was runner-up in the Division 3 singles, to Harry Roberts
Other results, not involving club members:
Open singles final: David Unwin expectedly won the Open singles, beating surprise finalist Ethan Lloyd in four sets.
Ladies singles final: Holly McGerty beat Sylvia Kenyon
Veteran Singles final: Colin Baxter won, inflicting on Dave Unwin his first loss of the season
Division Two singles final: Christopher Mirfin beat Sylvia Kenyon
Open Doubles final: Tom Coleman and Mark James beat Jeff Yaxley and Paul McGerty
Mixed Doubles final: Sylvia Kenyon and Paul Seabrook beat Holly McGerty and Ethan Lloyd
